Dean' s List—HWeek/XWeek

Angel L G10

Jeff J G10

Angel L G10

Jeff J G10

Harrow School in the UK is one of

the oldest and most prestigious

independent boarding schools in the world,

 known for nurturing and empowering

numerous successful and influential alumni.

Harvard University is one of the world's

most prestigious universities and

is known for its rigorous academic programs

and groundbreaking research.

The unique connection between Harrow and

Harvard is that they both have a prestigious

 reputation for academic excellence.

Both institutions have a rich legacy

of cultivating accomplished individuals

across diverse fields.

In the past winter holiday,

two Harrow Hengqin students were selected to

enter the Harvard University exchange programme.

Let's take a look at their exciting learning journey!

Dean' s List—HWeek/XWeek

HWeek/XWeek (Dean's List) is an exchange programme organised by the Harvard Undergraduate Association for US-China Relations, which invites the top high schools in the country to actively participate in Harvard's activities in China, and recommends outstanding students from each high school to represent the best of their school's students to study at top American universities such as Harvard University, Yale University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At each of the world's top universities, the students will communicate with renowned scholars and outstanding students from different disciplines at different universities.

A world-class academic environment

The two outstanding students from Harrow Hengqin went to Harvard University, a temple of academic excellence, and carefully selected a series of in-depth and challenging courses based on their unique academic interests. In this ocean of wisdom, they not only had the privilege of immersing themselves in Harvard's rigorous and vibrant teaching atmosphere, but were also able to sit side by side with a group of Harvard students with the same thirst for truth and the sparks of clashing ideas in the classroom.

I didn't need to try to adapt to campus life at first, as the rotating schedule and walking across buildings and classrooms was quite similar to my study life in Harrow Hengqin. Therefore, I quickly adapted to the fast-paced life here.

I chose to study the literature of Celtic mythology and the appreciation of American historical literature. In the classroom, I felt the students' diverse understandings and reflections on humanity and language. While keeping up with the pace of the lessons, I quietly soaked up the atmosphere of the classroom and the whole school, which was immensely appealing and enchanting.

I also took part in a workshop on climate change and visited a museum. This day gave me different perspectives on the world. Seeing nature's perspective rekindled my concern for the environment, while learning about Native American history and traditions provided insights into human development from a humanities perspective.

Harvard

I took courses in physics, biology, education and philosophy at Harvard, and I also attended a workshop. One striking moment that comes to mind was a class on educational outcomes from a cross-national perspective.

When I walked into the classroom and was greeted by a platter of donuts and the familiar beat of a Kahoot quiz, I felt almost 'at home'. Later in the class, the presenting students had everyone write down their notes on a piece of paper, crumple it up into a snowball and throw it at each other, so that everyone could share their thoughts and ideas with the people sitting next to them. Next to me sat a graduate student and through the incredible power of 'paper snowballs' , I became  less awkward at first. In this class, I learnt the passion for academics and good communication skills of Harvard students.

A taste of real Harvard life and culture

In a lively practice of cross-cultural exchange and integration, two Harrow Hengqin  students shared their unique experiences during their exchange at Harvard University.

Angel L G10

I still remember the first mentorship dinner we had, where five students were matched with a mentor - a current Harvard student - based on similar interests. It was awkward at first - five people trying to find common interests by talking about university applications and academics. Then, as our food arrived, we started chatting casually about other things: hobbies, interests, SATs, Harvard, MIT, Yale, startups and so on. Instead of feeling like a group of strangers sitting politely around a table, we felt like a group of friends catching up after class. We also visited many parts of the Harvard campus with our tutor.

Jeff J G10

I participated in Model United Nations and Asian Cultural Dance. Model United Nations involves the discussion of national, environmental and social issues, combining debate into a comprehensive thinking challenge. It impressed me with various professional skills and knowledge. The dance club, organised by a student from the founding organisation of the Dean's List, invited us and other students to experience Asian theme entertainment, which was outstanding and remarkable.

Harrow students' gains and growth

Angel L G10

Although it was an incredible experience to go to top universities such as Yale, Harvard and MIT and explore their beautiful campuses, attend clubs and workshops, see for myself how individual each school is in its core values, and be bombarded by an onslaught of the Socratic teaching method, the best part of it all was undoubtedly the people I met along the way. Peers, seniors, professors, teachers. Without them, I don't think my experience at these prestigious universities would have been quite the same.

Jeff J G10

The biggest challenge was my skill to ask questions. However, as we got to know each other better, I became more confident.  In terms of interpersonal interactions, I met many fellow students from different schools across the country. I believe that the true meaning of studying abroad lies in interacting with outstanding peers, and I advise students who, like me, want to challenge themselves and apply to top institutions to strive to improve, break through and surpass themselves. Maintaining good grades is important, but acquiring a broader perspective and experience holds equal importance.
