John Locke Essay Competition?
本次比赛中,他们的选题分别是“Does God reward those who believe in him? If so, why”和“What is the optimal global population”,而探讨这些话题,需要学生有全面的学科知识作为基础,也得益于协和学校丰富的学科设置。
Congratulations
to our students for winning awards in the John Locke Essay Competition!
What is John Locke Essay Competition?
The John Locke Essay Competition is an academic competition organised jointly by professors from prestigious universities such as Oxford and Princeton.
Covering seven major fields of humanities and social sciences, including philosophy, politics, and economics, it aims to encourage young people to develop independent thinking, in-depth knowledge, clear reasoning, critical analysis, and a persuasive writing style.
Following the national geography award, students from SUIS Sanlin campus have once again achieved outstanding results in what can be regarded as the "ceiling" of liberal arts competitions.
This time, we invite Mr. Hamilton, the head of the humanities department at Sanlin Campus to share with us how the humanities classes at Sanlin Campus are conducted and to offer advice for students who wish to choose humanities as their major in the future.
'Congratulations to Annie & Kallie for their hard work and dedication to their studies. It is truly a massive achievement. They both took all 3 Humanities classes at iGCSE and continue to pursue humanities at A-level.
Annie chose to write her essay on Theology answering the question ‘Does God reward those who believe in him? If so, why?’ and Kallie wrote her essay answering the Economics question ‘What is the optimal global population?’. These topics show the diversity of interests that exist at SUIS Pudong Sanlin Campus.
When introducing new topics in humanities classes, we always engage in classroom discussions and independent research to try and relate the content to the students’ lives and current events around the world. Complete assignments through presentations, posters, short essays, and other forms. Field trip is also utilized to take students out of the classroom and reinforce the knowledge they have learned.
Students who choose Humanities subjects are curious about the world around them, they have a global mindset, good writing skills and like to understand multiple perspectives. This helps develop good communication skills, and empathy for others and helps students make sense of the world they wish to go out to explore, study and travel.
For all students, I would suggest immersing yourself in the subjects you enjoy and developing your English language skills to be proficient enough to understand, read and write complex arguments so you can excel in a humanities subject. Simple habits like reading the news regularly, reading English language non-fiction books, engaging in discussions, joining debate clubs, model UN or Humanities competitions allow you to explore and discuss complex ideas.'
01
Various Course Options
Starting from the IGCSE, SUIS Sanlin Campus offers a rich selection of courses, requiring students to choose 8 subjects, including humanities such as history, geography, and economics, encouraging students to explore their interests.
In the teaching of humanities, there is a focus on cultivating students' critical thinking and academic expression, which aligns with the core philosophy of the John Locke Essay Competition.
02
Immersion in an English Teaching Environment
At SUIS Sanlin Campus, we place great emphasis on the importance of an English-speaking environment. We implement different sets of English classes to help students with varying English proficiency levels to improve their language skills. Except for Chinese classes, all subjects are taught in English, with 60% of our teachers are expats.
03
Previous Outstanding Offers in the
fields of Humanities
We encourage students who are passionate about humanities to actively engage in their favourite subjects, becoming more well-rounded, insightful, and participatory individuals in the future.
