Thomas Wells

Amanda Xie

Ellie Hu

Lucas Mullan

Cameron Liu

Otto Fischer

Tom Chen

Aaron Shi

Sienna Zhang

Emma Wang

William Li

The connections we built,

The lessons we learned,

The memories we created.

Canyoning in the tropical rainforest, surfing the waves, building a car with bare hands, trekking through karst landscapes, wilderness survival, rock climbing and cave exploration ......

Looking back on October, the Outdoor Adventure Week for Year 5 & Year 6 was like a collection of colourful gems in a stream, each moment forming unforgettable memories of courage, honour, humility, and fellowship.

The trip allowed us to experience both personal growth and collective unity. Being away from the routine allowed us to face new challenges, whether it was navigating the wilderness, conquering fears, or simply getting to know one another better. For some of us, it was about pushing beyond comfort zones—whether it was hiking up that steep trail or practicing surfing in the sea. For others, it was about learning to slow down, appreciating the peaceful moments, and embracing the beauty of our surroundings.

Y5 students travelled to Sanya Camp, which combines elements of the ocean and the rainforest.

Under the blue sky and beside the turquoise sea, they experienced the thrill of surfing and the joy of beach games, and participated in the construction of wooden race cars, feeling the rush of speed and excitement. They traced the stream in the tropical rainforest, climbed in the treetops and challenged the unknown with courage and teamwork spirit.

Throughout their journey, the children gained insights into the sustainable relationship between humanity and nature. They learned how to test water quality and took part in sea turtle conservation efforts. These moments left a lasting impression on them, helping them understand the pressing need to protect marine ecosystems and the significance of living in harmony with nature.

Let’s hear their thoughts on this exploration adventure!

Thomas Wells

I think the Sanya trip was lots of fun, and I learned lots of new things. For example, I learned that a long time ago, people used hay to weave shoes because they didn't have the right fabric. I tried surfing for the second time, and after a few practices, the feeling of successfully standing on the board was great! I hope to take my dog Athena with me next time I go surfing.

Amanda Xie

I liked this Sanya trip very much because we did a lot of exciting activities. I learned about surfing and how to balance. And we also saw the turtles. And we found out that turtles must eat sponges and stuff.

Ellie Hu

I learned to surf and some surfing tips, such as not falling back when you are about to stand up after lying down. I also learned some knowledge about sea turtle protection. For example, sea turtles are very powerful, and you need to protect yourself while feeding them. In the next academic year, I want to go to Dunhuang if possible!

Lucas Mullan

We practised balancing so that we were prepared for surfing, using a suite of cylinders and a wooden plank, to try to stay balanced. When we did car building, our car crashed and went all over the place. The pieces broke off and Henry was grabbing onto the wooden planks that we left and holding on to them. The cae had small cardboard for the wheels and it was very crazy.

Cameron Liu

I like nature very much. During the Week, our class surfed together. When we went upstream, we saw small fish, waterfalls, and many plants. Nature is so magical! I  worked in a group with Kitty and Alice to build a car using wood, wheels and ropes. After I finished it, I found it was not difficult at all!

Otto Fischer

I liked the F1 car-building competition the most, my teammates were William and Cameron. It was amazing to build a car together! Surfing was also a lot of fun; while we were out on the water, there were two of us on the board, and a camping teacher taught us how to surf. This was my first time surfing, and it was a wonderful experience!

Y6 students explored the mysterious and unique karst wonderland in Yangshuo, Guilin.

In a rock-climbing challenge, they overcame cliffs with courage; together with their buddies, they delved into the underground caves of Yangshuo to explore the endless mysteries of nature.

Meanwhile, our children also improved their outdoor survival skills! Tying knots honed their hands-on skills, and with teamwork, they set up humble but cosy safari tents. In the sparkling water, they learnt to navigate kayaks and mastered water rescue skills. All of these activities reflect the children's awe and exploration of the power of nature

Let’s hear their thoughts on this exploration adventure!

Tom Chen

So fun! Because there were lots of activities, like climbing, cycling, and Kayaking. I really like a cycling around the lake. It was a little cold, but I liked it.

Aaron Shi

I like the caving the most. I think it was a thrilling adventure. It was very dark in the cave, and we needed to rely on flashlights and headlamps to see the road ahead clearly. The cave was also very humid, and the road was slippery, which made it easy to fall. It took us more than two hours to finish the walk, which made us feel very successful!

Sienna Zhang

From the trip, I learned courage and fellowship. The cave was extremely dark, so we needed to bring a flashlight to muster the courage to set out. While caving, I almost slipped, but my friend caught me from behind and ensured my safety.

Emma Wang

The activity that I liked the most was cooking because this is the first time I’ve cooked. So, I think it is a very good experience, especially outdoors. We cooked pasta and some vegetables. I think they were both delicious. We worked together, some of us did the cooking, and some of us got the ingredients. And some of us set up plates and bowls.  I think it was a lot of fun.

William Li

This trip pushed me beyond myself and I was so scared when it came to rock climbing and high-altitude traversing that I didn’t want to try it. But when climbing along the rope from behind, I thought it was fun. I also thought it was very difficult to do kayaking, but it was only after the teacher taught me that I realized it was very simple. These experiences made me discover that you need to try it first, rather than thinking about whether it is difficult or not. You can learn it if you study hard.

At the end of this outdoor exploration trip full of adventure and survival challenges, we believe that every student has discovered more things about "themselves" - their own strengths, their own resilience, and their own ability to grow.

What made this trip special was not just the activities or the location, but the people. Every laugh, every shared meal, every conversation added a layer to the bonds we now share. It’s these interactions that will stay with us far beyond this trip. We’ve learned to trust each other more, to listen more deeply, and to support one another through the highs and lows.”
