Recently, Harrow Hengqin successfully hosted a Bilingual Speech Competition themed "Hope and Dreams." The event drew enthusiastic participation from numerous students, and after a rigorous preliminary selection process, the thrilling finals took place on November 1st. On stage, the finalists not only demonstrated their outstanding bilingual abilities but also conveyed their unique insights on hope and dreams.
After a series of captivating performances, Andy L from Grade 5 stood out with his excellent stage presence and fluent bilingual speech, earning the championship title. Additionally, Aaron L and Sissi Y claimed the top prizes in the lower and upper-grade categories, respectively. This competition not only showcased the students' bilingual language talents but also recognized and encouraged their spirit of pursuing dreams.
Emphasizing Personalized
English Learning
Do you think achieving the level of the competition participants takes a long time? Actually, it doesn't. This is thanks to Harrow Hengqin’s personalized learning experience. As members of an educational community, students and families receive dedicated support and communication from specialized teachers throughout the different stages, from consultation to post-enrollment, to foster each student's growth.
Some students who transferred from public schools to Harrow Hengqin this September have significantly improved their English proficiency after just seven weeks in the EAL program. In fact, some even advanced past the preliminary round of the school’s Bilingual Speech Competition and made it to the finals.
During a recent parent workshop, Upper School English Department Head Ms. Jane Adams presented the EAL program and its achievements to parents.
At the start of the term, the English Department conducted GSE assessments for all students. Those needing additional English support enrolled in the EAL main class for a seven-week course. Ms. Adams proudly shared with parents that, on average, these students improved their GSE scores in speaking, listening, and reading by four points, with some students even achieving an eight-point increase(It’s equivalent to making a year's progress in just seven weeks).
Strengthening the
Foundation of Chinese Culture
At Harrow Hengqin, we not only prioritize English learning but also place great importance on Chinese language education. Chinese teaching is integrated with cultural studies, and through activities such as “Chinese Culture Week” and educational field trips, students deepen their appreciation and understanding of Chinese history, traditions, culture, and language, enabling them to be knowledgeable about China while thriving globally.
On October 30th, Amy C from Grade 8 won the “Top 10 Chinese Stars” award in the Chinese Star Competition for middle school students in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.
This competition aimed to select students who “love Chinese, excel academically, possess innovative spirit, and have a unique understanding of the Chinese language.” It consisted of three parts: an impromptu speech, Chinese poetry appreciation, and on-site writing. Notably, Amy C earned a perfect score in the poetry appreciation segment.
As an international bilingual school, Harrow Hengqin has long emphasized the importance of public speaking skills. Harrow students exhibit confidence and eloquence when delivering speeches. Two other students, Derrick D and Joyce L, also secured top-ten rankings in the speech segment.
Harrow Hengqin students have made a strong impression both on and off campus with their excellent bilingual skills, confident stage presence, and impressive performances. We look forward to seeing them continue to excel and deliver even more remarkable achievements in the future.
