Dear SIS Families,

We are excited to highlight our School Without Walls (SWW) program, which our students from G4 and older are taking part in this week. At SIS, we believe that experiential learning is essential to your children's life. We take them out of the typical classroom setting and engage them further in their inquiry using the community resources, here in China or overseas. Through hands-on projects, field trips, and service activities, students develop critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills. This innovative approach not only makes learning engaging but also prepares our children to tackle real-life challenges. Enjoy some photos of Day 1 SWW from our G4 and G5 explorers.

Jingshan Planet Protectors:

Paving the Way for Sustainability in EY!

Our early years students have embraced their new role as Planet Protectors in support of our school-wide sustainability goal. Each day, a student takes on this important role, ensuring sustainable practices happen on campus, like caring for the plants, turning off lights, and conserving energy by keeping doors closed. This initiative aims to help raise their environmental awareness and instill a sense of responsibility in our young learners. Our aim is that these small actions make a lasting impact on our young learners, shaping a greener future for all. Let's continue to nurture these Planet Protectors.

KGFIP Spatial Exploration Project

In our Where We Are in Place and Time unit, KGFIP students embarked on an exciting journey to create a map of their classroom.

The project began with each student drawing their interpretation of the classroom, followed by collaborative discussions to identify key elements for the map. This teamwork highlighted the importance of organizing space effectively.

Students then constructed LEGO models in small groups, fostering communication and creativity. They analyzed their designs using the See/Think/Wonder technique, enhancing their understanding of two-dimensional shapes and top-down perspectives.

The highlight was creating a collective model and sprinkling flour over it to capture imprints, which served as a top-down view for their final map.

Next, students will dive into map legends and symbols in their Literacy course, reinforcing their visual communication skills. This project has been a fantastic blend of reflection, teamwork, and creativity, leaving a lasting impact on our young learners!

ASA in Focus:

Gecko Gardeners at TB and JS

For this school year, the Gecko Gardeners ASA was launched at The Bay by Ms. Leda and Ms. Zoe and at the Jingshan Campus by Mr. Cruz and Ms. Lora. Each week, students connect with nature, learn valuable skills, and foster a sense of responsibility.

Our early years students are learning about science concepts, such as how warmth helps seeds and plants grow. Our gardeners at The Bay visit the different gardening areas around the campus and plant vegetable seeds, herbs, and flowering plants. Gardening has always been a part of our after-school activities and we will continue to offer them throughout the year. Mr.Renier is also actively involved in these initiatives as he leads the school towards securing the Green Flag status for SIS. Join us!

Jingshan Parent Book Study:

Enhancing Writing and Math in EY

Jingshan teachers have been examining two books, "Already Ready" and "Playful Mathematics" to support Writing and Mathematics in our Early Years.  We extended this study to parents through a book study series, and together, we are looking at ways to nurture our children's growth and development at home.

Here are some tips to blend Math and Writing to inspire creativity and learning:
