This academic year, Huayao Collegiate welcomed a valued addition to its community—Katherine He, who joined as Deputy Director of the Student Development Department. Katherine brings a background in psychology from her studies in the United States and 13 years of experience working with students in international schools, devoting her expertise to elevating student-centered initiatives at Huayao Collegiate.

The Student Development Department at Huayao Collegiate focuses on the aspects of student life that extend beyond traditional academics. Here, students are encouraged to follow their dreams, try new interests, and experience the rewards of exploration. From club activities and field trips to evening study sessions and dormitory life, every "extracurricular" moment is carefully designed to spark students' intrinsic motivation, foster leadership skills, and instill a sense of social responsibility.

To facilitate this, Katherine keeps her office door open, inviting students to drop in anytime for academic advice or emotional support.
She frequently holds one-on-one meetings with students to understand their academic goals, interests, and future aspirations, helping her create tailored supporting plans and recommend relevant resources and activities. These conversations guide students in setting goals, managing time, and overcoming challenges.

At the start of the school year, during the Life Block course selection presentation, there was a notable increase in student-initiated clubs—now totaling over 20. Under Katherine’s guidance, students use designated Life Block class times to explore personal interests, with access to school resources and mentorship that build leadership and collaboration skills.
In addition to supporting student-led clubs, Katherine emphasizes the importance of faculty advisors in helping students connect club activities with broader social issues, amplifying their significance. For example, the GreenTech Engineer Club may organize sustainability projects on campus, while the Mandarin Debate Club might hold public debates on gender equality. Such initiatives broaden the impact of clubs, fostering critical thinking and social responsibility.

In boarding management, Katherine has established regular meetings and clear guidelines to foster self-discipline among students. Beyond ensuring safety, she focuses on enriching dorm life by encouraging staff and students to organize various activities, creating a vibrant and community-centered dorm environment.
