As we celebrate Reading Month at SAIS with our reading festival and house competition, we want to share our top tips for nurturing a love of reading in children. Drawing from our experiences as educators and parents, and inspired by How to Raise a Reader by P. Paul and M. Russo, we’ve compiled practical advice to help foster a lifelong love of reading in your child.
01
YOU
It All Starts with You
It may be cliché, but it's true: children will do as you do, not as you say. If you want your child to be enthusiastic about picking up a book, you need to demonstrate your own enthusiasm. Show excitement when a new book by your favorite author is released, and express the emotional highs and lows of your reading journey. By regularly reading in front of your children and sharing your excitement, you normalize the habits you wish to instill in them.
02
DISCRETION
Discretion is the Best Part of Valor
The temptation to evaluate your child’s reading performance can feel irresistible at times. Books with large numbered bands declaring your child’s reading level can seem like perfect motivation—“Wow! You are in the blue band already!” However, this can backfire. If your child is struggling or falling behind their peers, it can undermine their confidence and happiness regarding reading. Conversely, if they rush through books for the sake of external rewards, they may miss the true goal: a genuine love of reading. Instead, engage your children in conversations about the content of what they are reading rather than focusing on their reading band.

03
PIPELINE
Be the Pipeline, Not the Gatekeeper
Avoid being overly pushy or opinionated about the books your child chooses. As their primary source of books into their teenage years, your role is to facilitate their interests rather than control them. Kids are perceptive; if they feel you are channeling them toward books you want them to read instead of allowing them to explore, they may feel restricted. While ensuring that the content is age-appropriate, granting them freedom in their book choices fosters a sense of autonomy and enjoyment in reading.
04
TOGETHER
The Family that Reads Together
Many families have daily or weekly rituals—think “movie night!” As your child begins to choose their own books and read independently, consider organizing family reading time, just like you would gather around the TV for a favorite show. This reinforces the idea that reading is a family activity, providing an opportunity for children to share their experiences and discoveries from their own reading adventures.
05
SHELF
A Shelf and Sanctuary
From a young age, provide your child with their own shelf on the family bookcase. While eReaders are convenient, nothing compares to the satisfaction of adding a finished book to a physical shelf and seeing their collection grow like a row of trophies. Over time, as their shelf fills up, they can curate their collection, showcasing their favorite books and expressing their identity as readers. It's never too early to start this practice!
06
EXPERT
Let Your Child Be the Expert
Encouraging children to become fluent readers in a second language can be challenging, especially if you don’t speak that language yourself. However, this situation presents a wonderful opportunity for your child to take on the role of an expert. Ask them to translate parts of the book for you and share the stories they are reading in their second language. This not only allows you to celebrate your child's talents and achievements but also helps foster a bilingual love of reading.
07
TIME
Let Them Take Their Time
Learning to read and mastering literacy skills comes at a different pace for every child. It’s easy to feel anxious when comparing your child to others, especially when you hear about a child who read Harry Potter in kindergarten. But remember, each child is on their own unique path to reading fluency. Our goal should be to foster a love for reading, not to push them to compete with their peers. If you’re concerned about your child’s progress, consult their teacher to discuss the next steps. Many factors can influence reading development, such as dyslexia, reading anxiety, attention span, or simply a child’s level of maturity. Our role is to guide children through these challenges with patience, understanding, and a supportive, non-judgmental approach.
Finally, where can your child find a cozy spot to huddle up and read? J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, identified “escape, recovery, and consolation” as the purposes of fantasy literature. We believe this is true of all literature. By modeling enthusiasm for reading, allowing freedom in book choices, creating family reading rituals, and providing a personal space for books, you can cultivate a lifelong love of reading in your child. Growing up can be challenging, and ensuring your child has a comfortable space to relax and a love for reading can significantly enhance their well-being.
