Although Tarsila do Amaral and Christa Rijneveld have different styles, both artists break traditional landscape conventions in unique ways by blending abstract and figurative elements to create landscapes that are both realistic and imbued with a sense of fantasy. Tarsila uses vibrant colors and simple geometric shapes to showcase Brazilian cultural themes, while Christa incorporates surrealism, merging real scenes with dreamlike elements to give her work a sense of otherworldliness. These artistic styles have inspired students in their "Landscape" projects to move beyond realistic depiction, instead using bold colors, shapes, and a fusion of abstraction and surrealism to convey personal emotions and cultural interpretations. The students' work reflects rich colors, lines, and individualized expressions of landscapes, demonstrating their exploration and application of diverse artistic styles as they observe and interpret the natural world.
In Ms. Jasmine's class, students are gaining a deep understanding of Batik, a traditional Indonesian art technique, by experiencing it firsthand. The class encourages students to reflect on questions like "What is Batik?", "What is Batik used for?", "What materials do I need to create Batik art?", "What types of patterns are common in Batik art?", and "What do you like about Batik's formal qualities?". Through hands-on practice, students use hot wax to draw patterns on fabric before dyeing it, with the wax acting as a resist to keep parts of the fabric in its original color, resulting in a richly layered effect. This process allows students not only to experience unique textures and color transitions but also to understand how traditional crafts can be a means of creative expression. By incorporating Batik into their "Landscape" projects, students add elements of traditional art to their work, presenting landscapes with new depth and texture while experiencing the distinctive appeal of cultural heritage.
