在哈罗礼德独特的“PULSE”教学模型中,双语教师(Bilingual Teacher)与外籍主班、学科教师(Foreign Teacher)都在学生的学习过程中扮演同样重要的角色,根据每组老师的专长、每班学生的需求,灵活合作备课和授课。
其中值得一提的是,双语教师在各年级学生的双语学习中,起到的远不止是语言支持的作用,更不是单纯的“翻译角色”,而是学习知识概念的“神助攻”。比如,在学生进行主题学习的五大环节中(如下表),双语教师在Preloading阶段,能够用第一语言(中文),向学生有效地教授、解释和说明基本的概念和学术观点;并在后续4个阶段中,协助从中文到英文的学术语言转换和学习,助学生真正达到中英均衡发展。

As a K-12 internationalised bilingual school,
Harrow LiDe offers a nine-year compulsory programme of study with IGCSE
and A-Level options in high school.
Based on our philosophy of 'science-based teaching',
we adopt a balanced and complementary approach
to the development, teaching, and assessment
of our bilingual programme.
This means that students continuously develop their Chinese language skills and cultural awareness,
acquire new knowledge, and cultivate a strong sense of identity through their native language.
At the same time, in an immersive English environment,
the language and cultural literacy developed
in their mother tongue

In Harrow LiDe's "PULSE" teaching model, bilingual and foreign teachers play equally significant roles in the students' learning process, working together to prepare and deliver lessons according their expertise and the needs of the students.
Notably, bilingual teachers at all levels play a role that goes beyond language support. They are not merely "translators"; rather, they are "facilitators" of conceptual learning. For example, during the five phases of students' thematic learning (as shown in the table below), bilingual teachers can effectively teach, explain, and illustrate basic concepts and academic ideas to students in their native Chinese during the Preloading stage, and assist in the academic language transition from Chinese into English during the subsequent four stages, ensuring students achieve balanced development in both languages.

In addition to teaching all subjects in English and daily language lessons, teachers also spend at least 25 minutes on phonics or literacy on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, tailored to the students' level of English proficiency."

"Previously, Ms Gong (the bilingual teacher) would explain every detail to us in Chinese, but now she encourages us to think independently first. For example, we have a Chinese maths lesson and then an English one. It’s the same topic but with a different focus, which I think has made my mathematical thinking clearer."
The bilingual teaching of all subjects enhances the students’ understanding of the content – the Chinese lesson focuses on deepening knowledge, while the English lesson focuses on its application and breadth.

Thanks to our strong Pastoral Care
and small class sizes,
teachers are able to keep an eye on each student's learning needs and demands,
and provide personalised bilingual learning support based on progress tracking data.
For example, at the start of each new term, new students have to overcome anxiety related to English learning, while returning students need to make the quick transition from holiday mode into study mode. The school provides additional academic support for students, extending daily afternoon class meetings and mentorship sessions, and offering phonics or literacy programmes to create suitable learning entry points for students with varying levels of English proficiency.
