During the second week of the ISA Science City Summer Discovery Camp, campers were immersed in the wonderful world of STEAM. The second week of Discovery Camp at ISA Science City launched into high gear, building on the excitement of week one with a deeper dive into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Campers explored how these core concepts work together to create innovative solutions to real-world problems.

Younger campers got their hands dirty with a series of engaging activities that brought engineering to life. They experimented with models of electricity generation, electronic circuits, and water filtration techniques. These activities fostered teamwork and communication as campers followed instructions to complete a collaborative project, like building a paper airplane launcher.

For older campers, the week culminated in the thrilling challenge of constructing their own indigenous rocket launchers.This project brought abstract concepts like drag, thrust, Newton's Laws of Motion, and more into tangible focus. As they experimented with fuel, payload, and landing techniques, campers gained a deeper understanding of the principles behind real-world rocket launches.

Week 2 science class at Discovery Camp in ISA Science City was a thrilling and enlightening experience for the students. One of the highlights of the week was students made their very own ice cream. By adding salt to ice cubes, the ice melts and the temperature gets lower, which freezes the milk and cream. This experiment not only allowed them to enjoy a delicious treat but also helped them understand the scientific reasoning behind it. They even made the connection between this process and adding salt to icy roads to melt the ice and make the icy roads safer during winter.
在爱莎科学城暑期探索营的第二周,科学课程为学生们开启了一场心潮澎湃的启蒙盛宴。本周的璀璨亮点,莫过于学生们亲手调制并享用了自制冰淇淋。他们巧妙地利用冰块与盐的化学反应,促使冰块消融,环境温度骤降,进而将牛奶与奶油凝结为冰爽美味。这一过程不仅让味蕾得到了极致的满足,更深刻地揭示了实验背后的科学奥秘,让学生们恍然大悟,甚至联想到冬日里撒盐融冰,保障道路安全的智慧之举。
In addition to the ice cream experiment, the students also explored the solubility and immiscibility of different substances. They learned about how certain substances dissolve in others, while others do not mix at all. This hands-on exploration allowed them to witness firsthand the fascinating interactions between various substances.

For the older kids, they also built on their knowledge gained from last week's eruption experiment by delving into the concepts of acids and bases. The students used red cabbage juice as an indicator to test the acidity or alkalinity of everyday items. It was truly remarkable to see their faces light up as they discovered whether the items were acidic or basic.
对于高年级的学子而言,科学探索之旅更进一步。他们在前一周火山喷发实验的启发下,深入探索了酸与碱的奥秘。利用红菜汁这一天然指示剂,学生们化身为小小化学家,逐一测试日常物品的酸碱性。每当发现新奇的酸碱属性,他们的脸上便绽放出璀璨的笑容,这份由探索带来的喜悦与成就感,无疑成为了他们心中难以忘怀的美好记忆。

One of the key area of focus for our students in week 2 was to maintain an organized notebook. Notetaking skills became a habit for our students daily as they would begin each note with the date. Students learned to patiently take notes from the board and were asked to finish their work at home. They would also be quizzed the next day as a way build their knowledge. Legible writing is an important part of child development and should be cultivated in interesting ways. Students were given opportunities to draw diagrams to accompany their work. At the end of the week, students will have a notebook with several pages of note taking that they can keep as a memory of Camp Discovery!

Week 2 was filled with wonder and excitement as the students in the Rocket class took a journey to explore the mysteries of the moon and stars. The week began with a focus on the moon's different phases, and the children were thrilled to participate in the "Phases of the Moon" Oreo cookie activity. Using Oreos to represent the waxing and waning moon, the students were able to not only learn about the lunar cycle but also enjoy a tasty treat in the process. The children were encouraged to draw depictions of the moon and stars in the night sky. These vibrant creations showcased the students' budding creativity and their growing understanding of the night sky.
在第二周的时光里,幼儿园的学子们满怀惊喜与雀跃,踏上了一场揭秘月亮星辰奥秘的非凡之旅。本周焦点聚焦于月之阴晴圆缺,孩子们以满腔热情投身于“月相”奥利奥创意活动中,以饼干巧妙演绎新月与残月,既深谙月球流转之律,又尽享味蕾上的甜蜜盛宴。我们鼓励每位小画家以夜空为布,以月亮与星辰为墨,挥洒出他们初露锋芒的创意与对浩瀚夜空日益深厚的理解。
To complement our exploration of the moon, we read two captivating books: "Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me" by Eric Carle and "How to Catch a Star" by Oliver Jeffers. These stories ignited the children's imaginations and fostered a deeper appreciation for the beauty and significance of the moon and stars. The week ended with our rally presentation, where the students performed the energetic song "Zoom, Zoom We're Going to the Moon."

During the Friday rally, the students recited the rhyme "Tuning Up for Out of Space," further showing their knowledge and excitement about the wonders of the night sky. As we move forward, we look forward to continuing to inspire the students and fostering their love for the natural world around them.
