Perhaps you have already heard of the phenomenon of 'artistic Ivy League admissions,' which has become a hot topic online. Originally, Ivy League referred to eight prestigious schools in the United States, such as Columbia and Yale. However, this concept has now expanded to include the top 30 schools in the United States, as well as the G5 universities in the United Kingdom and other renowned institutions.
‘Artistic Ivy League admissions’ refers to the phenomenon where students apply to Ivy League schools through art programs to relatively lower the difficulty of admission. There are mainly three ways to achieve this:
Enter an Ivy League school through an art and design program, then transfer to a non-art major to lower the admission threshold.
Use art and design works as supplementary materials when applying for non-art majors to showcase personal comprehensive abilities and creative thinking.
Directly apply to an Ivy League school's art and design program.
Regarding 'artistic Ivy League admissions,' the internet is filled with various descriptions and keywords, but its core lies in the integration of academic and artistic development. Next, let's discuss how academics and arts play a critical role in the comprehensive development of students.

Applying to Ivy League schools for art majors requires
comprehensive preparation in various aspects.

Some people might think that the admission standards for art are lower than those for comprehensive disciplines. Before exploring the specific advantages of integrating art and academics, let's look at a specific case. Take Cornell, New York University, and Ohio State University as examples. The GPA requirements for these three schools are 3.9, 4.0, and 3.8, respectively, while the GPA requirements for their art programs are only 0.1 or 0.2 lower. The TOEFL scores are not much different (minimum 82 versus 109), and there are SAT score requirements as well. Applications for art programs also require academic performance, language proficiency, and extracurricular activities, along with the additional preparation of a portfolio. Therefore, the standards for art are not lower than those for comprehensive disciplines.
*Data sourced from university official websites
In summary, applying to top universities through art does have some advantages, such as slightly lower academic and English requirements. Therefore, for students aiming to apply to top-tier institutions, the combined approach of "academics + art" and interdisciplinary development is particularly important.

The role of interdisciplinary learning in art programs cannot be ignored. For example, Renaissance master Raphael better mastered the use of color by studying optics in physics. Additionally, his knowledge of architecture gave him a deep understanding of construction, proportion, and perspective. These comprehensive academic studies not only enriched his artistic creations but also made him a versatile artist.

Contemporary artist James Turrell's creations further demonstrate the allure of interdisciplinary learning. He uses light installations to create a sense of boundless space. Turrell's love for flying from a young age and his fascination with the sky have profoundly influenced his artistic creations. As an undergraduate, he majored in perceptual psychology and minored in mathematics, astronomy, and physics before specializing in art at the graduate level.

Although Raphael and Turrell are separated by 500 years, and their background knowledge differs, they both demonstrate the ability of artists to inspire limitless creativity and innovation through interdisciplinary integration.
Artistic study requires not only a solid background knowledge but also a clear understanding of what the artist aims to express and convey. Interdisciplinary learning provides a broader perspective and a deeper foundation for this expression, making artistic creations more vibrant and impactful.

In ISA ART Centre, we are dedicated to nurturing students with rich artistic literacy and a solid academic foundation. We particularly emphasize the importance of the following aspects:
1
Comprehensive Development
Under ISA Liwan's guidance, students will develop problem-solving abilities that integrate sensibility and rationality, becoming well-rounded artists and designers with both creativity and practical skills.
2
Humanistic Care
Sensory problem-solving goes beyond technical breakthroughs to emphasize the importance of humanistic care. For example, accessible design addresses not only technical issues but also the specific needs of particular groups, reflecting the spirit of humanistic care.
3
Continual Pursuit of Meaning
An essential goal of arts and design education is to help students find motivation and direction in their creative endeavors. We encourage students to continually pursue the meaning of their creations, keeping their passion and drive alive on their artistic journey.
At ISA Liwan, we not only impart knowledge but also focus on cultivating students' abilities to solve practical problems, inspiring their creativity and humanistic care. Our goal is to enable every student to excel in their future paths in art and design, going farther and doing better.
Let's now take a look at the stories of art students together!
