In this exhibition, students share their work and the understandings they have acquired through an inquiry into the persuasive influence of stereotyping in Chinese, Music, and Visual Art classes.

Harmonious Rebellion

Henry/Andy/Alan

The initial intention of this interdisciplinary project is to present the stereotype existing around the world through our original music. Therefore, after having a discussion in our small group, we decided to create this song in a dark, and sad vibe since we think it will emphasize our theme, the stereotype, in an impressive way. As the result of our decision, it is a d minor scale song.

In terms of instruments arrangement, we selected a dark piano which does not have much high frequency. This piano has done its job well, it sets the mood from the beginning of the song until the end. We used trap drum to again match and emphasize the vibe of our song. We also tried piano with violin; however, we did not adapt this idea because we think violin would break this dark, moody tone of the song. Eventually, we used only four melodic instruments including bass, to keep it simple and make the vocals stand out. We want the audience to focus on our lyrics and understand what we are trying to express.

SUCCESS AND CHALLENGE

Producing a complete song was very challenging for me because it involved a lot of aspects that I had not been exposed to, such as musical arrangement and lyrics. But eventually I managed to solve these challenges by actively asking my teacher and my  classmates who were more experienced.

Capturing Authenticity

Kirby

My artwork is about a disabled person playing on an empty basketball court, I wanted to use this artwork to challenge the stereotype that disabled people are very needy. This piece was created with the help of Ms. Anna, my art teacher. Firstly,  I chose to photograph a person with a disability to represent a stereotypical theme because I wanted to express the stereotype of people with disabilities as needing help or having mobility problems.

Secondly, I wanted to show that people with disabilities can break through stereotypes and realize their own ideas. I chose the wheelchair and playing basketball as the main parts of the theme of the whole work, because I wanted to use the stereotype of disabled people that they couldn’t play sports to deepen the theme. Then Id use the overall art to shoot into the main three parts from bottom to top of the wheelchair, the disabled person and the basketball court to highlight that disabled people could also be respected. We should not discriminate against them or exclude them, and give them equal opportunities and rights.

SUCCESS AND CHALLENGE

To finish this unit, I have learnt how to explore different cultures and the spread of various cultures in many ways. Not only has this made me aware of new stereotypes, but the work I have created knowledge about stereotypes to people so that they are not fixed in their thinking by stereotypes.

Colors of Perception

Lin

The work is a painting that reflects real-world gender stereotypes. The piece incorporates a variety of different gender stereotypes, including sexism in clothing, colors, and hairstyles. First, the reason I use gender stereotypes to express the big theme is because gender stereotypes are a classic example.

Secondly, in order to clearly present the theme of gender stereotypes, I chose a series of male and female signs in public places such as toilets as the main body of the entire work. I think this is a very simple and easy-to-understand logo, so that the audience can clearly understand my purpose and my changes.I then chose to further express gender stereotypes through color contrast. In a nutshell, through a series of changes to male and female signs in public places, I amplified the potential stereotypes of male & female signs. Through that,I challenged the stereotype between male and female.

SUCCESS AND CHALLENGE

When I was creating my work, I went through a lot of challenges. First, I spent a long time just choosing my topic. Later, I spent some time finalizing my work. Choosing what works to do can be said to be the most difficult period of my artistic creation.

Lens of Transformation

MARTIN

My work is a tattooed hand, and I wanted to express the theme of stereotypes about people with tattoos. First of all, I only  chose tattoos to reflect stereotyped themes because, when I was young, many people would tell me to stay away from people with tattoos, but later through some of my own experiences,1 found that not all people with tattoos are dangerous, so I found this to be one of those stereotypes that fits right in with the unit we're studying right now.

Secondly, to present the theme of stereotypes more assertively, I chose hands as an integral part of the entire work. The reason is that I found that many people like to have tattoos on their hands or arms, so I chose hands to become the main part. I then decided to use hearts to further show that there is good will  with those tattoos. I want to express through my work that people should not face all people with tattoos with a hostile attitude.

SUCCESS AND CHALLENGE

In this unit, I feel that what I did well is that I can have a good understanding of what stereotypes are, and at the same time, I can very well discover some stereotypes that exist in daily life. We found that stereotypes have two sides. At the same time, we analyzed the advantages and disadvantages brought by stereotypes. The advantage of stereotypes is to help people form opinion quickly, but the disadvantage is that they ignore people's individuality. At the same time, I was able to see how stereotypes work and exist between different fields.
